PCS Benefits &
Entitlements

Your military move comes with financial support designed to ease the transition. Here is a clear breakdown of the benefits available to you and your family.

A Permanent Change of Station move is one of the most significant events in military life. Whether you are PCSing to Fort Cavazos, NAS Fort Worth JRB, or any installation across Texas, understanding your entitlements ensures you maximize every dollar the military provides. Below is a guide to the key financial benefits that support your relocation.

Dislocation Allowance (DLA)

DLA is a flat-rate payment that helps cover the miscellaneous expenses of relocating, such as utility hookups, deposits, and the general costs of setting up a new household. The amount is based on your pay grade and whether you have dependents. You do not need to submit receipts for DLA, which makes it one of the most straightforward entitlements to claim.

Pro Tip

DLA is paid automatically when your travel voucher is processed. Make sure you file your voucher promptly after arriving at your new duty station to avoid delays.

Monetary Allowance in Lieu of Transportation (MALT)

If you drive your privately owned vehicle to your new duty station, the military reimburses you a per-mile rate. MALT covers one vehicle per service member and an additional vehicle if you have dependents. The rate is updated annually and is calculated based on the official distance between your old and new stations.

For families driving from out of state to Texas, this reimbursement can add up significantly. Keep your fuel receipts organized, although MALT itself is a flat per-mile rate and does not require fuel documentation.

Per Diem & Travel Days

Per diem covers your meals and incidental expenses during travel days between duty stations. The number of authorized travel days is based on the official driving distance, with a standard calculation of 350 miles per day. Your dependents also receive a separate per diem rate, typically at 75% of the service member's rate.

Texas Note

Texas is a large state. Even an intrastate PCS, such as moving from Fort Bliss in El Paso to Fort Cavazos in Killeen, can cover over 500 miles and qualify for multiple travel days of per diem.

Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE)

TLE reimburses you for lodging and meals when you need temporary housing at or near your old and new duty stations. You are authorized up to 14 days total, which can be split between departure and arrival. This benefit bridges the gap between vacating your previous home and moving into your new one.

When you arrive in Texas and your new home is not quite ready, TLE keeps your family comfortable while I help finalize your housing. Many service members use this window for final walkthroughs and inspections.

Weight Allowances & Shipment

The military covers shipping your household goods (HHG) up to a weight limit determined by your pay grade and dependent status. You can arrange a government-managed move through the Defense Personal Property System (DPS), or opt for a Personally Procured Move (PPM, formerly DITY) where you move your own belongings and receive reimbursement.

Maximize Your PPM

A PPM can be financially advantageous. The military pays you a percentage of what it would have cost them to hire movers. Weigh your vehicle before and after loading, keep all receipts, and submit your claim through DPS promptly.

Advance Pay

PCS moves come with upfront costs that can strain any budget. Advance pay allows you to request up to three months of base pay before your move. This is repaid through payroll deductions over the following 12 months, giving you the cash flow you need to cover deposits, travel expenses, and other immediate costs.

Submit your request through your finance office as early as possible after receiving orders. Having this financial cushion when you arrive in Texas gives you flexibility during your home search.

Planning Your Move

The military provides excellent online tools to help you stay organized and informed throughout your PCS:

  • Plan My Move — generates a personalized timeline and checklist based on your specific PCS orders, calculating entitlements and deadlines automatically.
  • DPS (move.mil) — the official system for scheduling household goods shipments and tracking your move status.
  • MilitaryINSTALLATIONS — detailed information about every installation, including nearby housing, schools, and community services.

Start Early

The best time to begin planning is the moment you receive orders. Contact me as soon as you know you are headed to Texas, and I will coordinate your home search timeline with your official move dates.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is DLA and who qualifies for it?

Dislocation Allowance (DLA) is a flat-rate payment designed to partially offset the out-of-pocket expenses of a PCS move, such as utility deposits and connection fees. All active-duty service members with valid PCS orders are eligible, and the amount varies by pay grade and dependency status.

How are weight allowances calculated for household goods?

Weight allowances depend on your pay grade and whether you have dependents. For example, an E-5 with dependents may ship up to 9,000 pounds of household goods. Exceeding your allowance means you cover the extra cost, so weigh and declutter before your move.

Can I receive advance pay before a PCS move?

Yes. You can request an advance of up to three months of base pay to cover relocation expenses. The advance is repaid through payroll deductions over up to 12 months. Submit your request through your finance office as soon as you receive orders.

What is the difference between TLE and TLA?

Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) reimburses lodging and meal costs within the continental U.S. for up to 14 days combined at your old and new duty stations. Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA) serves the same purpose for overseas (OCONUS) moves and can last up to 60 days.

How do I use the Plan My Move tool?

Plan My Move is a free tool on Military OneSource that generates a personalized moving checklist and timeline based on your PCS orders. Enter your move details at planmymove.militaryonesource.mil, and it will calculate your entitlements, suggest action items, and help you stay on track.
